We had a Audi A4 for a week of vacation in May, and never could get the radio to function. The buttons made absolutely no sense. What happened to good German information design with icons that communicated across cultures? I've been shopping for a new radio/CD player for our car. I'm a industrial designer, and I'm astounded by the lack of human factor and operational considerations in the design of most of these units. Tiny buttons placed all about with little logic. Graphic light shows and all sorts of goo-gah. Tilting faces. The stuff is so goofy, I'm insulted, and have put off my purchase until I see something with some safety factors and ease-of-use come to market. I dare one of the brands to step up with some intelligent product that seperates itself from the 12-18 yr old homogeneous marketing demographic target of the Panasony-Kenwoo-Alpineer-JVCpunkt toy boys. Hint -- knobs rule over buttons for volume and station search!
